Review: JurassicWorldDominion messes with the past, with mixed results.
. Still, there are moments when one can almost let go of the past and enjoy’s propulsive blare, particularly a bracing tear through the dusty-hued streets of Valletta, Malta. You half expect to see Ethan Hunt, the gravity-defying lead of thefilms, go whizzing by in the background. I think Trevorrow would welcome the association.
While Pratt and Howard make a mess of cafe tables and a sort of Mediterranean dinosaur wet market, Dern, Neill, and Goldblum are busy skulking around a high-tech facility in the mountains of Italy, where a sinister biotech company has been using dino DNA to manufacture insidious creatures.
But that’s only if you squint too hard—and this is not a movie meant for squinting or other close analyses. Though the script, by Trevorrow andmostly seeks to drag us along for its indulgent 150-minute run in the hopes that it will exhaust us into thinking we’ve been served a rich, satisfying meal.plays a new character, tough-cookie smuggler pilot Kayla, and adds a welcome dash of edge and ambivalence to the story. She makes a great case for continued action movie stardom.
There’s already been a lot of writing about the frustrations of nostalgia projects like this, the half-reboots or “re-quels” that have plagued multiplexes for years now. There’s no need to rehash the cynical, diminishing-returns vampirism of these things—revisits enough old ideas on its own. Anyway, the irony is plenty evident already: don’t try to revive what long ago met its natural end, these films warn with an increasing lack of self-awareness.
