A Lansing man has been found not guilty of first-degree murder in connection with the March 2014 death of his 2-year-old daughter, who authorities said had been severely beaten after soiling herself.
A jury has acquitted a Lansing man of first-degree murder charges in connection with the March 2014 beating death of his 2-year-old daughter, according to the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.
Authorities had alleged Thompson severely beat Jakariah Patterson March 19, 2014, inside a Lansing home after she had soiled herself. Prosecutors said Thompson, who was on parole for robbery at the time of his arrest, struck Jakariah after she soiled herself, causing her to fall forward and strike her head on the toilet and floor. He then forced the toddler to sit in her own waste, prosecutors said, and struck her numerous times in the back and stomach. An autopsy determined Jakariah died of multiple blunt force injuries from child abuse and her death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner’s office.
Lansing Police Chief Al Phillips said that he and department investigators are “dumbfounded” by the jury’s decision.Phillips said evidence presented to the jury included a videotaped interview police conducted with Thompson in which he Phillips said he admitted to the crime.
