Laura Langley denies murdering her daughter, Edith Langley

The trial of a Blackpool mother accused of murdering her seven-week-old baby daughter has come to a halt. Laura Langley, 37, is accused of killing her daughter Edith after the newborn suffered multiple rib fractures at her home in the seaside resort.

But after two weeks of evidence the jury in the trial, at Preston Crown Court, has been dismissed today . It is not yet known whether there will be a retrial.Emergency services were called to Langley's home in Belgrave Road, Marton, at 3:54am on November 20, 2020, when Langley called 999. Edith was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital, but despite efforts to save her life, she was pronounced dead at 4:53am.

Edith had suffered 30 fresh rib fractures but Langley said her death was 'sudden and unexplained'. Langley denies murder and child cruelty, in connection with three older cracked ribs. Discharging the jury, the Honorable Mr Justice Morris said: "It is rare for a jury to have to be discharged before it considers its verdict but that is where we are in this case. I realise this must be very frustrating for you to not finish the job you have started but I thank you all for the work you have done and your dedication to this case."
