“There was no disagreement that what Denver did was awful,” one juror said.
After three weeks of trial, all eight jurors who awarded $14 million to protesters injured during the 2020 George Floyd protests in Denver agreed without debate that the city was at fault for its police officers’ actions, according to one of the jurors in the room.
The five hours the jury spent Friday deliberating instead focused on exactly how much money to award each of the 12 plaintiffs and evaluating the actions of the sole officer named as a defendant in the case, she said. “We live in a society that says we’re all free and equal,” she said in an interview Monday. “What does it mean when those rights are violated by those who are sworn to protect us? What is that worth? It was not so much their physical injuries but the impediment on their freedoms and rights.”after finding Denver failed to properly train and supervise its officers and that those failures led to police officers violating the plaintiffs’ constitutional rights under the First and Fourth amendments.
“It was just citizens seeing humanity in these protesters who had their rights violated, and seeing the humanity of the officers and how there was not enough oversight and support,” she said.
