Justice Minister Simon Harris confirmed to Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín that of 5,091 deportation orders signed since 2018, 781 have been 'effected'
The State can only confirm that 15 per cent of those issued with deportation orders over the last five years have actually left the country.
He explained: "The numbers for deportation orders effected does not take account of individuals who have left the State without informing my Department. Last year, there were 528 orders signed. There is confirmation that at least 119 people left the State. However, he argued that the Government must do more to ensure it keeps better records of those who have left the country after receiving a deportation order."The Government says that some of these people may have left of their own accord. But the fact that we don’t know if they have left or not basically means that the process is a voluntary system for the vast majority of people.
