Russell Wilson is in, and Pickett became the latest malcontent shipped out, revealing a new approach from Mike Tomlin and the Steelers.
PITTSBURGH — We’ve heard it time and time again from Mike Tomlin: “We want volunteers, not hostages.” The coach first used the phrase back when Le’Veon Bell was holding out during the 2018 season and has brought it back many times since. But as time has gone on, those words ultimately rang hollow. The locker room discourse, the in-house fighting and the me-first attitudes were becoming more and more rampant inside the organization, and they became loud enough to at least get noticed.
Clearly, something has changed. According to team and league sources, the Steelers have put a greater emphasis on the people — not just the players — they’ve considered bringing in during free agency, even for free agents who might seem like a perfect fit on the surface. Advertisement Of course, George Pickens looks like the outlier in all of this. When you have talent like Pickens, sometimes the team’s hands are tied.
