Arsenal star Katie McCabe won her first Ireland cap 10 years ago next month.

She is set tonight to captain her country for the 65th time, when Ireland kick off their Nations League campaign at home to Turkey, in new manager Carla Ward ’s first game in charge.

McCabe was only 21 when, in August 2017, Colin Bell made her the youngest captain in the history of the Irish team. “Three of those girls who used to help me have recently retired. I just want to give them a special mention as well - Diane , Niamh and Julie-Ann - for what they have given to Irish football.

“I can't wait to lead out the team in the upcoming World Cup qualifier and hopefully lead the Republic of Ireland WNT to their first major Championships,” she said. “It’s my job as captain to pick up the pieces of that and motivate the girls, and obviously Carla coming in and the motivation from the staff as well to get going again and to get that drive and the hunger going to get back to playing on a world stage.“And with the players coming in, we’ve lost Diane, Niamh and Julie-Ann to retirement but with that, it gives opportunity to people to step up to the plate now and to show what they’re made of and to keep pushing this national team.
