Imran Hussain resigned after being informed by Labour whips he could no longer formally support a ceasefire and maintain his job

Sir Keir Starmer faces another potential test to his authority after a Labour MP tabled an amendment to the King’s Speech urging Parliament to back an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza.faces another potential test to his authority after a Labour MP tabled an amendment to the King’s Speech urging Parliament to back an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza.

Mr Hussain, MP for Bradford East, was told by Labour whips he could no longer formally support a ceasefire and maintain his job as shadow minister for the New Deal for Working People. In a speech last week, the Labour leader insisted collective responsibility was “important” and something he took seriously.

It is not clear whether the amendment would be chosen by Commons Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, but if it was the Labour leader would have to make a decision about whether to whip his MPs to vote against it. It has been signed by Labour backbench MPs including John McDonnell, Dr Rosena Allin-Khan and Richard Burgon, as well as Green MP Caroline Lucas, Plaid Cymru Westminster Group Leader Liz Saville Roberts MP and the SDLP’s Claire Hanna.
