Keir Starmer defends David Mellen's role in Nottingham City Council's financial crisis and pays tribute to his public service. Potential successors to Mellen as the leader of the Labour Group are mentioned.
Keir Starmer says Nottingham City Council 's financial crisis is nothing to do with its leader as he paid tribute to David Mellen 's "public service." Councillor Mellen has announced he will not stand to be the leader of the Labour Group controlling Nottingham City Council this year when its AGM takes place on April 15.
But speaking during a visit to Nottinghamshire on Monday , Keir Starmer said Nottingham's problems could be pinned on Government "chaos." Speaking about Councillor Mellen's decision to step down, Mr Starmer told Nottinghamshire Live: "He's standing down, he's given that public service, which is very important.
"But the challenges are not to do with the leader of the council. The challenges are to do with the failure of the Government to support our councils and to simply put more and more burdens on them.
