Pressed on how this would be achieved, he said he would use the same model employed under former Labour prime minister Tony Blair to impose waiting time targets to ensure people are treated promptly.
Sir Keir said: “The last Labour government did obviously put targets around it so there is a model there that we know can work. They drove the waiting lists down dramatically over two or three years. It will fall to us to do the same thing.” “I’d like to begin see a difference straight away,” he explained. “But it will take time because reforming public services always does. There are things that can be done in the immediate here and now in terms of the ambulances, nurses, junior doctors, waiting lists, not being able to see a GP – they are all the immediate problems.
