The inside track on the football stories that matter
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has revealed Manchester United’s record-breaking revenue is likely down to the club playing Champions League football last season., the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted there weren’t any major commercial deals that would have helped boost Man United’s revenue for 2023/24.
But Man United were swiftly dumped out of Europe after finishing bottom of their group, while their eighth-place league finish ensured they won’t be playing in European football’s premier competition again next season. They will, however, be lining up in the Europa League come September following their FA Cup final victory over Manchester City.Wyness insisted the upturn in revenue is solely down to Man United qualifying for the Champions League rather than any other factors having an impact.
