New Match of the Day host Kelly Cates spills the tea on her off-air conversations with Roy Keane, revealing his love for family, music, and the surprising origin of his new nickname, 'Cardi B'.
New Match of the Day host Kelly Cates has revealed what Roy Keane talks about when the studio cameras are turned off during Sky Sports ’ Premier League coverage. Cates has been selected as one of three new presenters of BBC’s iconic highlights show, along with Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan. Her new role won’t signal the end of her on-screen partnership with Manchester United and Ireland legend Keane, as she will continue to front Sky Sports ’ weekend action.
And that means more off-air conversations with the Corkman, who she recently nicknamed ‘Cardi B’. Cates told Oliver Callan on RTE Radio 1: “They (Keane and his fellow pundits) are all really lovely to work with. But I think when you spend a whole day in a studio and you have got a couple of games on, actually you are off-air more than you are on-air, so you get to talk about other things rather than football. So you get to know people rather than pundits.” Asked if she had any revelations about Keane, Cates replied: “He talks about his family a lot. He is just a really strong family man and he talks a lot about his wife and his kids and his grandchildren. It’s just really lovely to get that. And (he talks about) music and other things that he has been up to. So it’s lovely, you just get a much more rounded picture of who people are. I think that helps in a way to kind of try and bring out the best in them, because that’s a big part of my job, to bring out the best in the pundits. So the more you kind of know them as people, the easier that is to do.” As for Keane’s new nickname, Cates revealed that it stemmed from a brown cardigan that he wore on-air recently. “We were all waiting for him to get changed and then he was like, ‘No, I’m going on in this’, so we were, like, ‘Okay’,” she explained. “My phone… just message after message after message about Roy’s cardigan. I think it was 0-0 at half-time and I thought, oh well, if it had been 2-2 and there had been a sending off and a penalty or whatever, I wouldn’t have mentioned it. But I was like, do you know what, we might go in on the cardigan for a little bit.” She added: “Cardi B, that was it.
