Kenmare Resources , a Dublin-based titanium miner, announced significant financial challenges, leading to workforce reductions, dividend suspension , and a substantial net loss. The company cited a confluence of adverse market conditions, including declining shipments, lower average prices for its products, and uncertainties surrounding tax regulations in Mozambique , where its key Moma mine is located.
The group's revenues experienced a 20% decline, primarily driven by a 13% decrease in shipments and a 6% decrease in the average price received per tonne of its products. The Moma mine, crucial to Kenmare's operations, produces approximately 6% of the world's titanium stocks, making it a significant player in the global market. The primary products, ilmenite and rutile, are essential components in a diverse range of industries, including paints, plastics, paper, and high-tech applications like aircraft, medical equipment, and sporting goods. The company's financial performance deteriorated significantly, culminating in a reported gross profit plummeting by 79%, alongside a substantial net loss of $325 million (€280 million). This loss was further exacerbated by a $301.3 million impairment charge against its Moma assets, reflecting lowered long-term revenue assumptions amidst the uncertain pricing environment, the company stated. The decline in financial performance has necessitated decisive actions, including the reduction of approximately 15% of the workforce at the Moma mine. This strategic adjustment aims to streamline operations and ensure long-term financial stability during a period of considerable economic strain. The company is also suspending its final dividend, marking the first instance of such an action since it initiated dividend payments in 2019. The Board of Directors acknowledged the significance of the dividend for many shareholders and expressed a commitment to resuming payments as soon as financial conditions allow. The Dublin-based group has been in negotiations with the Mozambican government for over three years regarding a new implementation agreement. The previous 20-year accord expired at the end of 2024, although the terms were extended temporarily until a new agreement was reached. However, recent actions by Mozambican tax authorities to impose new VAT and customs charges on Kenmare’s imports and increasing the royalty rate on Moma's production and exports added to the company’s difficulties. Kenmare reported that despite this the group has entered into “constructive negotiations and both sides appreciate the importance of a near-term resolution”. The company is optimistic that through ongoing discussions, a mutually acceptable outcome can be reached, potentially averting the need for arbitration. Tom Hickey, group chief executive, emphasized the difficult but responsible decisions made, including the workforce reduction and dividend suspension, as a means to maintain balance sheet flexibility and safeguard the group's financial resilience in the face of challenging market dynamics. The company is actively working to navigate the complexities and uncertainties of the current business environment, while simultaneously managing its operational and financial obligations
