Kerry GAA legend Kieran Donaghy opened up about his father’s struggle with alcoholism and gambling on the Tommy Tiernan Show on Saturday night.
“My dad had some issues with drink and gambling, and he’d a tough enough journey on his own,” he said. “I think he might have been a bit bipolar, he used to have fierce highs and fierce lows, and I think the drink might have been a coping mechanism at the time, maybe,” Kieran said. “If it was nowadays, I think someone would have grabbed my dad, and said ‘Listen, you’ve got three lovely kids, a lovely wife. Grab a hold of yourself,’ or ‘Go in and dry out’.
“The older you get and the more you think about it, the more you think, ‘Could I have done more to help?’ ‘Could I have looked past the issues that he obviously had and sort of grabbed the man…”
