Selector Aodán Mac Gearailt says that the Kerry ace spends 20 minutes on his routine ahead of training.
Aodán Mac Gearailt was always going to answer Jack O’Connor’s call once it came, but the David Clifford bonus material made it all the more appealing.
“I have a good relationship with Jack, even as a player going back and I suppose we'd be similar enough in the way we see football,” Mac Gearailt explains. “I was involved with the Kerry development squad under-15 and he asked me would I like to get involved and I was delighted. I mean, at the end of the day, these opportunities don't come around too often, so I said, ‘Yeah, absolutely, Jack’.
“I remember the goal he got against Galway in an All-Ireland minor final with his right foot from the opposite side, into the top corner. It was a bit Declan Meehan-esque. I knew this guy is an absolute genius, the way he sees the game but he also works really, really hard. And yeah, it's an absolute privilege.”
“That routine takes maybe 20 minutes before we ever start to warm up. And he goes through every bit of it meticulously. So, again, it's not just by chance he can lift his leg that high. It's hard work.”
