One of the aims of the FRC is to make Gaelic football one of the most attractive games to play and watch. Is allowing goalkeepers to continually dominate games really going to hit that target?
And so we’re up and running after a first round of the League that brought more interest and intrigue than I can ever remember.
Morgan himself had interesting comments in the aftermath of the interprovincial games last October. At the time, he led us to believe that he and other goalkeepers would be wary of venturing forward too much as there is too much risk involved. Michael Murphy’s recent rumoured run out in goals for Donegal is another dagger in the heart of the traditional ‘keeper.
One of the reasons I suspect the FRC wanted to keep the ‘keepers involved was for the excitement factor highlighted in the Roscommon-Down game, when John O’Hare was nowhere to be seen as the home side broke and Ciarain Murtagh shot to an empty net. Dublin’s half forward line of Sean Bugler, Kevin Lahiff and Ciaran Kilkenny hit a staggering 1-11 from play between them, with Bugler himself hitting 0-7.cMayo’s half-forward line of Conor Reid, Fergal Boland and debutant Davitt Neary hit 1-6 between them from play.
That leads me to the amount of high scoring games this weekend which was refreshing to see. Albeit the number of two-pointers would have bloated the scorelines, the Cavan-Monaghan, Cork-Meath, Roscommon-Down, Kildare-Roscommon and Dublin-Mayo games were particularly high-scoring affairs.
