Hunwicks will take on a new challenge after leaving his role at Headingley.
Richard Hunwicks, Leeds Rhinos ' Performance Director, will leave the club with immediate effect, Rugby League Live can reveal. Following Leeds' win against Huddersfield Giants on Thursday, Hunwicks has opted for pastures new after serving a lengthy notice period.
Hunwicks arrived at the club as a key appointment to Richard Agar's coaching staff ahead of the 2022 season, supporting the Rhinos to their 2022 Grand Final run and has been responsible for the Rhinos' physical performance programmes across the club. But he will now depart Headingley to take on a new challenge, a move that will see the Rhinos lose a key member of their coaching staff. Hunwicks is highly regarded, particularly by the players, and has a wealth of experience in rugby league.Overseeing a superb period of success at Catalans Dragons while acting as their Head of Performance, a job he did for four years before joining the Rhinos.
Before that, he had spent three years at the RFL as Head of Human Performance working directly for Wayne Bennett’s England side, cumulating in a World Cup final appearance in 2017. He is expected to attract interest from organisations across the sporting world given his experience in high performance. For the Rhinos, it leaves them without and integral member of their coaching staff at a time when there is uncertainty over the long-term identity of their head coach. Brad Arthur was recently appointed, but only until the end of the season.
