The Houston Grand Opera production runs Oct. 10-13 at Miller Outdoor Theatre
Sankaram and librettist David Johnston built “Monkey and Francine,” which runs about 45 minutes, out of an assortment of folk tales from India, West Africa, and China. Many featured monkeys as central characters: trickster in some, more of an enlightenment-seeker in others. Another source of inspiration were the comic-book tales of Hanuman, monkey companion to Prince Rama in the Hindu epic poem Ramayana, which Sankaram read as a child.
“It felt like it should be something energetic and fun, keeping in mind that it’s going to be kids that see this for the most part, and they are really the most honest audience you can have,” Sankaram says. “If they get bored, they let you know. It had to be something that that fit the story and kept it moving forward, but was also fun.”“David's text is really funny, so I also had to be following where the humor was and trying not to step on his jokes,” Shankaram says.
