It's a huge rebuilding project, but with the young talent in the county and the GAA landscape leveling off, Flanagan's timing may well be right.
The four year term handed to new Kildare boss Brian Flanagan is an admission that lily whites’ fans will have to be patient in the coming years.
Luck of the draw will play a big role in how Flanagan’s first year pans out, but this is the landscape into which he comes. The only bonus here is that they can’t go much lower than they are so Kildare should make early progress to gain player buy-in. The favoured anecdote here for how a down and out county can progress is Derry, who were relegated to Division 4 in 2019, but rebuilt to such an extent that they won this year’s Division 1 title.
Armagh’s timing was good this year but they earned their break by virtue of being hugely competitive over three seasons on the bounce. Flanagan knows this crop of young talent inside out. This is a big benefit, and having achieved success under him, this will engender a degree of loyalty to the man and the county before he even begins the job.
