★★★★ Killing Joke live catapults us back to post-punk’s thundering heyday
However, if you are expecting an evening of simple nostalgia, forget it – the band remains a no-nonsense punk outfit, delivering a full-on visceral live performance. Killing Joke live up to their name; there is no quarter given. This is a serious band that has never resorted to humour or light banter: I stand next to an old punk who repeatedly calls for Coleman to “speak to us!”, to no avail.
But the performance is captivating. Coleman holds the audience’s attention with his nuanced gestures: from tiny hand movements to full-on Hammer Horror Frankenstein marching, everything has its place in the band’s well-rehearsed iconography, and is deployed with tactical precision. Killing Joke always had a unique style, and as a band, they have influenced a surprising number of major rock acts, from Nirvana to Metallica, and many other purveyors of heavy riffs. Here, the diesel-powered rhythm section and jack-hammer drumming is loud, but remarkably nifty, effortlessly pounding out tribal patterns and thundering anthems.
