As replacement for Fernando Tatis Jr., shortstop Ha-Seong Kim has played more than twice as many innings as he did in 2021
He bounced a ball off the plate and sprinted toward first base in time to beat a throw in the top of the eighth here Thursday night, and in the bottom of the inning he raced from near second base to the hole at shortstop to grab a groundball and keep a runner from advancing home.
“He’s been fantastic at times,” Melvin said. “Offensively, he’s carried the load. … You talk about a gold standard at shortstop. Makes all the plays. He’s done it all year. We’ve played just about everybody this year. I don’t see anybody that much better than him.” On Sept. 2, he raised his batting average to .260, the highest it had been since the last day of April. His .333 on-base percentage after that game was about where it had hovered much of the summer.
“I played as a full-time starter numerous years in Korea,” said Kim, who averaged 139 games over his final six seasons in the KBO. “But here, playing every day is just a completely different animal. I’ve done that. I’ve been through it. I was able to stay strong the whole season in Korea. But here, we still have some games left. It’s just different. It hits me different. I just try work. I’m just trying to finish the season strong. Here, it’s even hard to get a hit every day.
