The ebullient ceremony reflected the fact that Broadway, after its first full season since the pandemic, has much to celebrate

The actor, best known for her Oscar-winning turn in Steven Spielberg’s “”, opened the telecast for the 76th Tony Awards by flicking nervously through blank pages in a binder marked “script”. Casting it aside, she then twirled through the United Palace theatre in New York, where the televised ceremony took place on June 11th.

Broadway producers rely on the Tonys to get their shows known outside New York, explains Ken Davenport, a Tony award-winning producer whose show “A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Musical” is now on Broadway. Some reportedly spend between $100,000 and $1m on their campaigns for a Tony Winning an award or being nominated for one boosts sales throughout a production’s run, says Gabriel Stelian-Shanks, artistic director of the Drama League, a theatrical association.

The triumphant ceremony reflected the fact that Broadway, after its first full season since the pandemic, has much to celebrate. Audiences are returning, though numbers have yet to reach pre-pandemic levels, according to the Broadway League, a national trade association. Theatregoers are, on average, paying more for tickets, too, which suggests increased demand.
