Kimi Antonelli Wins Inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at Madring, Extends Lead to 81 Points
Formula One, Spanish Grand Prix, Madring Circuit

Kimi Antonelli won the first Formula One race at Madrid's Madring circuit, beating Max Verstappen and Lando Norris after a virtual safety car gave him a free pit stop. The win extends his championship lead to 81 points with nine rounds remaining.

Kimi Antonelli won the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring circuit in Madrid on Sunday, taking his eighth victory from 14 rounds this season and extending his championship lead to 81 points with nine scheduled rounds remaining.

The 20-year-old Mercedes driver beat Red Bull's Max Verstappen by 4.3 seconds, with Lando Norris third, just seven tenths further back. Antonelli took advantage of Lance Stroll putting his Aston Martin into the wall on lap 14 to earn a free pit stop during a Virtual Safety Car period. Norris had been comfortably leading and held a seven-second advantage over Antonelli before Stroll's accident, but the world champion drove past the pit lane entry just as the VSC was deployed.

Norris stopped on the next lap and a slow front-right tyre change cost him even more time. He left the pits 13 seconds adrift of the Italian. McLaren could have kept him out but opted to still take the stop under full racing conditions, and the VSC ended just before he was called in. Charles Leclerc, who had not stopped, led for the majority of the race before finally peeling in on lap 49.

The top three were then separated by only two seconds, but with overtaking next to impossible at the narrow street venue, Antonelli kept his rivals at arm's length. Norris caught Verstappen and attacked him in the closing laps while lapping back markers, believing the Dutchman had left the track to hold second place on the penultimate lap. The stewards decided Verstappen had not broken the rules.

It was as lively a moment as the race had seen after the opening lap. George Russell crossed the line in fifth for Mercedes, questioning his team's decision to move him on to a unique two-stop strategy. He dropped to sixth before moving ahead of Red Bull's Liam Lawson. Russell asked over the radio: Why did we pit?

I think I could have held Norris off. Lewis Hamilton's fading title hopes ended early when he retired with a brake problem on lap six. The 41-year-old Ferrari driver was hit with a brake failure and was forced to park his car, his first retirement of the year, with his bid for a record eighth world crown all but over. Hamilton is now 101 points off the championship pace, the equivalent of more than four wins.

Norris is 106 points back. Verstappen moved ahead of Antonelli and Hamilton early on but was ordered by Red Bull to give up the positions to avoid a stewards' investigation. Antonelli reclaimed second and Hamilton third. The Madring circuit, which sits around the Institución Ferial de Madrid convention centre area between the city centre and the airport, is hosting the first meeting in Madrid since 1981, when Gilles Villeneuve won for Ferrari at the Jarama circuit.

Its debut was marked by a decided lack of overtaking. After the opening lap there were only four on-track passes and none of them at the sharp end. Even before the weekend began, drivers had questioned whether overtaking would be possible just from their experience on simulators. As they took to the track their instincts proved all too prescient.

The high-speed layout is compromised by braking zones angled in to many of the corners. It requires drivers to brake while turning in, removing the option of putting a car alongside by out-braking an opponent, allowing for only one line into the corner which is easily defended by the leading car. Verstappen, who had been outspoken in his criticism of the design and predicted a procession, said on Saturday the track designers had made mistakes. He said: You can't overtake.

They need to learn that it should never be that you have to steer, that you have to combine under braking, because it doesn't allow any kind of overtaking. He added: In terms of track design, I think it can be better. Input from drivers in the future on track design can also help a lot. I know they will always come back to you and say: Yeah, but the space.

But that's BS. There's always a way to find an overtaking opportunity around a track. Norris headed into Sunday's inaugural fixture at the Madring with two victories from his last three appearances and led away from pole position despite Antonelli falling off the road twice in his pursuit. But the timing of the VSC proved disastrous for the British driver.

Antonelli dived into the pits for a cheap stop and new tyres, but Norris had already passed the pit lane entrance when the car was called. His stop was slow, a full seven seconds. Norris crawled out, his lead gone and down to fifth place, with Antonelli now behind Leclerc. Norris remained very quick but his track position had gone.

With 10 laps remaining he was within a second of Verstappen and just two seconds behind Antonelli. It was his best chance of the entire race, but he could not find a way past the Red Bull driver. Antonelli, who also won the previous round, is now firmly on course to drive into the history books by usurping Sebastian Vettel, who was 23 when he claimed his first title in 2010, as the sport's youngest world champion.

He has extended his lead over second-placed Russell to 81 points, up from 66 before the race. It was his least entertaining win of the season, but the Italian will not care at all as he closed out in control. Verstappen finished runner-up, with Norris third and Leclerc fourth for Ferrari. Russell was fifth for Mercedes, ahead of Lawson.

The 2026 Formula One World Championship Spanish Grand Prix was the 14th round of the season, held from September 11 to 13, 2026 on the Madring in Madrid. The race confirmed both Antonelli's dominance and the serious concerns about the newest circuit's ability to produce competitive racing.
