The King and Queen's state visit to the Vatican next month to meet with Pope Francis has been postponed, Buckingham Palace has now announced in a new statement
The much-anticipated state visit of the King and Queen to the Vatican to meet Pope Francis has been postponed, Buckingham Palace confirmed. The Royal couple were due to visit Italy from April 7, with a meeting with the pontiff—who has been experiencing health issues—planned.
It is understood that the King and Queen's tour of Italy will proceed, albeit with some adjustments to the schedule. The Pope appeared weak when he greeted the crowd outside the hospital before his discharge, raising questions about whether he would be able to meet the Royal couple. The state visit was announced just over a week before the Pope was admitted to hospital. Since then, Charles has written privately to Francis, likely wishing him a speedy recovery.
They will also pay homage to literary culture by visiting Dante's tomb, while the Queen will make a solo visit to the Byron museum.
