The portrait of Queen Elizabeth II will be replaced on Australia’s new five dollar note, but not with a British monarch.

The decision, by Australia’s Reserve Bank, follows a consultation with the federal Labor government, which is also pushing for a referendum to recognise First Nations people in the constitution and consult with them on decisions that affect their lives. Greens Senator Lidia Thorpe described the decision as a “a massive win for the grassroots, First Nations people who have been fighting to decolonise this country. First Nations people never ceded our Sovereignty to any King or Queen, ever. Time for a Treaty Republic!”
