11 years ago, Richard Childress was putting Kyle Busch in a headlock and punching him. Now, Busch is accepting a green Rolex from Childress, “The Bachelor” style. How did the animosity cool? They are both racers, in the truest sense of the word.
Busch was quick to point out “there’s only one” Earnhardt Sr., but he’s certainly cut from the same cloth. And he once had ambitions to match Earnhardt’s career: the seven championships, all the race wins, the intimidating dominance on the track.
Can he get back to the Kyle Busch ways of dominating races and hogging trophies at RCR? It’s certainly far from a guarantee. On the other hand, Tyler Reddick has shown the No. 8 car has plenty of speed and has found success with a smart crew chief at the helm . Reddick is mega-talented and has a high ceiling for potential but is still somewhat raw — and has two wins this season. Busch, with 18 years of Cup Series experience and a more refined talent level after already learning the lessons Reddick is still going through, should be able to win multiple races per year as well.
Heading to RCR won’t mean Busch is going to suddenly become a kindler, gentler personality. If you’re a fan who didn’t like Busch before, he’s probably not going to convince you to like him now. Childress won’t make Busch tone down anything about his attitude, but that actually might result in a happier Busch.
