But unless we accept that she was merely reflecting the values of those around her, Britain’s institutions will continue to be blighted by prejudice, discrimination and elitism. She is the: an aged person of the privileged old school, untroubled by the contemporary sensitivities of race and creed. Her entire working life was spent in a cloistered environment that has determinedly resisted the cultural shifts of the outside world. She observed at first hand Prince Philip’s casual racism, talking about “slitty-eyed” Chinese or suggesting that South Sea islanders practise cannibalism. Over the years, for sure, she’ll have heard many offensive things.. It normalises behaviours and language that, elsewhere, would be considered way beyond the pale.
Buckingham Palace said that her remarks were “unacceptable and deeply regrettable” while Prince William, Lady Hussey’s godson and a father raising three children in this environment, added that “racism has no place in our society”. These are easy responses, characteristic of an unwillingness to assume collective responsibility – which was also apparent when Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, claimed that she had been the victim of discrimination.
