Lake Forest High School graduate Alex Timbers, who won a 2021 Tony Award for directing the Broadway production of “Moulin Rouge! The Musical,” is once again immersed in the colorful world of that iconic Paris club.
The eyepopping set of the multiple Tony-winning production of “Moulin Rouge! The Musical,” directed by Lake Forest High School graduate Alex Timbers, has been recreated for the run through May 14 at Broadway in Chicago’s James M. Nederlander Theatre.
The Broadway production won 10 Tony Awards, two Drama League Awards, five Drama Desk Awards, and 10 Outer Critics Circle Award Honor Citations. Timbers said that the biggest challenge of directing “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” was “finding a vocabulary that was truly theatrical to kind of match Baz’s filmmaking style. His work in that movie has all these incredible pans, truly frantic editing, and some crane shots. It’s epic and adrenalized. And in theater we don’t have any of those things. We had to create theatrical analogues for the kind of energy and motion that the film is so known for.
Timbers reported that the touring production is a little bit different in its staging from the productions they have staged on Broadway and in Australia and London.
