Coach Darvin Ham says Davis felt tightness in his back after their morning shootaround and that the team decided to take the cautious approach with the oft-injured big man.
MINNEAPOLIS — Going into the season, Anthony Davis had only one stated goal: play all 82 games.
Davis had been determined to stay available for the full season, and even after evidently aggravating his back against Denver, he insisted, “I’ll be fine.” But Coach Darvin Ham said Davis’ back tightened up on him after Friday’s morning shootaround, which he participated in. Davis has played well individually through the team’s poor start: He averaged 24 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocked shots in his first four games. It hurt especially that the Lakers faced Rudy Gobert and Karl Anthony-Towns in Minnesota, perhaps the biggest frontcourt in the NBA.
“It may take two or three guys to try to give us what he did in one body,” Ham said of Davis. “But it’s the next man up, we just have to keep rolling.”
