City Council President Dan O’Malley, who represents Ward 4, said his decision to resign is tied to his recent nomination by Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb to serve on the Port of Cleveland board of directors.

Lakewood City Council President Dan O’Malley. LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- City Council President Dan O’Malley, who represents Ward 4, announced earlier this week his resignation.

“I really do want to be able to serve not only the broader county but also working people as part of this port authority. So, I leave with a deep sense of regret. I love being a councilman. I love being council president. I enjoy it, I think I’m good at it and I hope that there will be an opportunity to serve the city again in the future.”

Once appointed by the city of Cleveland, O’Malley is leaving Lakewood to become a commissioner for the Port of Cleveland, which as one of the largest ports on the Great Lakes is tied to more than 20,000 jobs and $3.5 billion in annual economic activity related to the roughly 13 million tons of cargo that move through Cleveland Harbor each year.
