Lamenting the parts of the Olympics gone missing ClosingCeremony Beijing2022
I was at the Ice Cube to take in Canadian Brad Gushue’s bronze medal, where my time at the 2008 Summer Games united with the 2022 winter version.I had first worked in the venue 14 years earlier at the 2008 Summer Games when it was then the Water Cube, home of the swimming meet and one of the greatest Olympic spectacles of all time.
The Water Cube was energized for each of the Phelps races, much like any Olympic track that Usain Bolt ever touched. Beijing 2022 was never going to be like that, of course, thanks to COVID in general and Omicron specifically. You felt like you were in China: Living, breathing and tasting the experience. Embracing the culture, consuming the food, living the life beyond the stadiums and arenas that can make an Olympics breathtakingly special.Article content
But when the bus window is your lens into what truly is an enchanting country, at the very least there is lament. Yes … the meals. For the first time in my career I’ve seen colleagues giddy at the opportunity of travelling to another hotel for a slightly different variation of the same stuff with the bonus of being able to buy a $15 pint of draft beer.Article content
