Things could change when it comes to roadworks in the Valley

A campaign for new charges on gas, electricity, water and broadband companies who dig up roads has been heard in Westminster.

Rossendale and Darwen MP Sir Jake wants ministers to use what is known as a ‘Statutory Instrument’ to allow the county council to adopt a ‘lane rental scheme’ which would mean that utility companies would have to pay to close the road to carry out their work and repairs. A similar system already operates in London.He started an online petition called ‘Stop the gridlock in Rossendale’ which attracted more than 1,700 signatures.

“The new approach we are proposing would incentivise utility companies to work together and complete the job as quickly and efficiently as possible when digging up our roads.
