East Lancashire is fairing extremely poorly when it comes to child poverty
The figures have been compiled Loughborough University for the End Child Poverty Coalition. They show that out of the 650 Westminster parliamentary seats, Blackburn is 10th hardest hit, Hyndburn 34th, Pendle 46th, and Burnley 58th.
The statistics were produced using Household Below Average Income data released annually by the Department for Work and Pensions. Former Hyndburn MP and Labour Parliamentary candidate for the seat at the next election Graham Jones said: “9,794 children in Hyndburn, according to new research, live in some form of poverty or in low income households.“At the end of 2022, 44.4 per cent of children were living in some form of hardship in Hyndburn. That’s nearly half of every classroom.
“These figures are sadly from 2022 and do not take into account the hardship felt today as a result of the cost-of-living crisis. When I wrote to Hyndburn’s headteachers back in 2018 on this issue, they told me that they were dealing with child poverty every morning and that hungry children had little chance of fulfilling their potential in life.”
“It is absolutely within our gift to begin to tackle child poverty and doing so should be the aim of any government. Tackling child poverty has to start with political determination, a joined-up plan which recognises the scale of the challenge we face, and the right long-term investment in children and families.
“Child poverty rates have been rising year-on-year under the Conservative government, and it’s clear they have no plan to tackle it.”
