A landlord in Miami is accused of fatally shooting a tenant over a disagreement about the thermostat during a cold snap. The victim, Carlos Alberto Gonzalez, died after being shot multiple times in the head by his landlord, Adam Louis Anson.
A landlord is accused of fatally shooting a tenant multiple times in the head during an argument over the thermostat in freezing weather. 37-year-old Adam Louis Anson faces charges of second-degree murder and burglary with assault following the death of 57-year-old Carlos Alberto Gonzalez in Miami.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, the incident stemmed from a dispute between the two over the thermostat as temperatures in south Florida plummeted to single digits during an unexpected cold snap. Anson allegedly armed himself with a semi-automatic gun around 8 am and went to an apartment on his property that he rented out. Police say he knocked on the window, intending to adjust the thermostat. Notably, the thermostat was located in a hallway within the rented portion of the property. The situation escalated when Gonzalez opened the door. Anson allegedly punched him unprovoked and forced his way inside. He then dragged Gonzalez outside to the backyard and shot him multiple times in the head, according to arrest documents reported by CBS News. After returning inside, Anson reportedly adjusted the thermostat and called 911 from his side of the home. Emergency responders transported Gonzalez to the hospital, but he died from his injuries. Anson claimed self-defense, stating he fired because Gonzalez had attempted to attack him first, according to details from the affidavit. He was subsequently arrested and taken to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. A neighbor described being terrified by the incident and hearing the gunshots. 'After seconds, I was able to recognize that something wrong was happening in my backyard and I was extremely scared,' Leyani Perez told WTVJ, NBC's local channel. 'I started screaming and I called my husband, 'Hey go to the backyard because I feel a stranger is in the backyard.' Then I heard boom, boom, boom, boom.
