The Mayor of Greater Manchester said the Government’s decision to hand over new powers and an increased budget to his city-region is ‘massively significant’
It will mean Mr Burnham and his Conservative counterpart Andy Street in the West Midlands – who is also receiving funding settlement – are given control of a much larger budget by Whitehall and can set their own priorities in key areas. Investment Zones – first introduced by former Prime Minister Liz Truss in a bid to spur the UK’s sluggish growth – will be given £80m in funding and offer businesses incentives such as tax breaks and fewer planning rules.
