Firefighters were called to the scene just outside the city centre shortly before 10.30pm
Thick smoke was seen across parts of Liverpool as firefighters tackled a large fire in the city. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service are urging people to avoid Canada Dock, in Kirkdale , as they deal with the ongoing blaze.
Firefighters were called to the scene just before 10.30pm on Thursday with two fire engines tackling the blaze. The fire is amongst a 10,000 tonnes pile of scrap metal. A Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson told the ECHO: "Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance at an incident at Canada Dock, Regent Road, Kirkdale. Crews were alerted at 22.17 and on scene at 22.28, with two fire engines attending."On arrival this is approximately 10,000 tonnes of scrap metal with fire located within the pile. Onsite staff are utilising plant machinery to remove metal from pile.
"As a result of smoke issuing from the scrap metal fire, residents and businesses in the area should keep doors and windows closed. People with an existing health condition should keep medicines close and if any ill effects are experienced dial NHS 111 for advice.Merseyside Police, on their @MerPolCC X account, said: "Please be aware Merseyside Fire are dealing with a large fire currently on Regent Street, L3 area . Please try to avoid the area at this time.
