Worst year on record for hospital overcrowding in Ireland as 118,367 patients left without beds, figures show
The number of patients left without beds in 2019 was 118,367, 9% higher than any other year, according to an analysis released by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation .November was the worst month for overcrowding, with a staggering 12,055 patients left without hospital beds.
INMO chiefs have placed the blame for the crisis on a lack of resources and understaffing, pointing to the fact there are 411 fewer inpatient beds in Irish hospitals than there was a decade ago. She said: “Things are getting worse, not better. These figures should be falling, but we’re going the wrong direction.
“Instead, the HSE continues to enforce its rigid recruitment controls, starving hospitals and community services of the staff they need.
