OPINION: What Canada has experienced over the recent years, and what we are bound to experience, even more, are the increasing risks that climate change poses to our communities and environment, writes Alexandra Lesnikowski and Jean-Patrick Toussaint.

The need to adapt to climate change is coming into sharp focus in Canada — a country warming faster than most of the rest of the world.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ’s latest report, released this week, reminds us of the current and future effects of climate change, and clearly demonstrates the need to scale up our efforts to adapt to our changing climate. The IPCC’s report reminds us that relying on reactive crisis management to deal with climate risks is not, and cannot be, a sustainable way to reduce such impacts in the long run. We need to plan long-term and change how we manage our social, economic, and environmental systems if we’re to meaningfully reduce the negative effects of climate change on our populations, especially the most vulnerable.

Last, as the IPCC report highlights, the most vulnerable and marginalized members of our societies are too often excluded from adaptation decisions — the very groups disproportionately affected by climate change. We must ensure that our upcoming National Adaptation Strategy is people-focused and inclusive. If we don’t, our adaptation responses could further increase climate risks for the most vulnerable, instead of reducing them.
