The Andersonstown Road site has been beset by local resident opposition and later funding concerns
The eyes of the sporting world are set to be centred on West Belfast in five years time as the proposed Casement Park development was confirmed as one of the host venues for a successful Euro 2028 bid from the UK and Ireland.
Pressure is likely to ramp up on NI politicians with an Executive still absent from Stormont, with calls for both the UK and Irish governments to step in with additional funding for the redevelopment.Where is Euro 2028 stadium Casement Park? The stadium is located in West Belfast, on the Andersonstown Road, around four miles from the city centre of Belfast.
Why have plans for the stadium’s redevelopment stalled? Planning permission for the stadium had been granted by Environment Minister Mark Durkan in 2013, but a High Court judge later ruled that he had acted unlawfully in approving the project. A further legal challenge brought by the Mooreland and Owenvarragh Residents Association was dismissed in 2022, leading for calls for the stadium to be progressed.
The GAA has said it remains prepared to contribute £15m in order to see the stadium built on the Andersonstown Road. That was also the figure the GAA was willing to pay back in 2011 when the NI Executive gave a commitment to upgrade Casement along with Windsor Park and Ravenhill. Why was a GAA ground chosen as a stadium for a European soccer tournament? Put simply, there are currently no sporting grounds in NI that are big enough to meet European football governing body UEFA’s 30,000 minimum for hosting matches at major tournaments. The IFA’s National Stadium at Windsor Park has a capacity of 18,500, well short of UEFA’s minimum.
