Plans to build nine flats on the site of a tyre shop in Watford have been rejected.

The proposal for the Capital Tyres site in Queens Avenue sought to add an extra home to the eight that were approved by Watford Borough Council last year.

However, a council officer has concluded adding an extra floor will “harm” the character and appearance of the area. The three-storey element of the building was described in their planning report published on August 8 as “at odds” with neighbouring properties, making the scheme “unattractive and disjointed”.

Four objections had been received with complaints about loss of privacy and light and a lack of parking. This application was the fourth attempt to build homes on the site, which would involve the demolition of the existing tyre business including a warehouse, yard, and smaller commercial buildings. In March 2021, permission was secured from the council for eight flats. None of the homes are proposed to be affordable and no car parking spaces are included.
