A US lawyer representing a woman suing Conor McGregor for alleged sexual assault has praised Nikita Hand for her courage in taking on the UFC star. A new civil lawsuit alleges that McGregor assaulted the woman in a bathroom at the Kaseya Center in Florida during an NBA game.
A US lawyer representing a woman suing Conor McGregor for alleged sexual assault has commended Nikita Hand for her “brave” fight against “very tough odds.” A 49-year-old woman, described as a senior vice president at a prominent Wall Street financial institution, is filing a civil suit against McGregor, alleging he sexually assaulted her in a bathroom at the Kaseya Center in Florida during an NBA game between the Miami Heat and the Denver Nuggets on June 9, 2023.
Speaking exclusively to the Irish Mirror, Florida-based attorney James Dunn said his client ultimately decided to file the civil suit “after the Miami Dade County police department didn't sufficiently redact a document it disclosed to a press outlet and a member of the press contacted my client directly.” Mr. Dunn was responding to a query from this paper about whether the woman, who remains unidentified, was inspired by Nikita Hand’s recent successful High Court case where a jury found McGregor raped her at the Beacon Hotel in Dublin. In response, Mr. Dunn, who is also representing the woman in this new case, stated: 'Ms. Nikita Hand's actions are brave and commendable. Her legal team, including Dave Coleman, John Gordon, Ray Boland, and others, worked hard with Ms. Hand against very tough odds.” Florida police have not pursued criminal charges related to the alleged sexual assault at the basketball arena. Following this, the woman has filed papers to initiate a civil suit, similar to Ms. Hand, who also acted after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) ruled there would be no criminal charges against McGregor. Speaking previously, the woman’s lawyer, Mr. Dunn, said: 'My client has thought long and hard about the decision to pursue this civil case, and is fearful of the effect it may have on her job on Wall Street. Nonetheless, her main goal in filing this suit is to raise awareness and encourage others to report sexual assault.'The lawsuit alleges that staff and security at the arena 'had actual knowledge of the wrongfulness of the conduct' and failed to provide adequate security to protect her. It also accuses staff of continuing to serve McGregor alcohol despite having a 'chargeable knowledge of a heightened risk of battery being carried out.' The lawsuit mentions that McGregor was at the game for a promotional skit in which he struck the Heat’s mascot, Burnie. Burnie was reportedly hospitalized after being rushed off the court. Barbara Llanes of Gelber, Schachter & Greenberg, counsel for Mr. McGregor, has also issued a statement alleging the claims made by the woman are false. 'After a thorough investigation at the time, the State's Attorney concluded that there was no case to pursue. Almost two years and at least three lawyers later the plaintiff has a new false story. We are confident that this case too will be dismissed.'Last week in Ireland, McGregor was spared the prospect of contempt of court after High Court Judge Alexander Owens said he was wary of giving the case further publicity but warned that the UFC star cannot be allowed to “relitigate” the case on social media. Judge Owens ruled that McGregor is not entitled to share the CCTV footage from the case with anyone and said the MMA star had engaged online in 'irresponsible comment' in which he “attacked” the jury and called Ms. Hand a liar. The Judge stated that the “facts are clear” that Ms. Hand sued Mr. McGregor and the jury last November determined that he “raped her” at the Beacon Hotel in December 2018. 'It follows that it isn’t open for him to make contrary claims. He doesn’t get another run of the case by throwing out material on social media,” he said. Later in the proceedings, Judge Owens granted a stay on the €248,000 sum awarded to Ms. Hand but ordered that McGregor now pays her €100,000 of that before any appeal. He also ordered that Ms. Hand be paid €200,000 in costs at this juncture, with the court hearing the total costs in the high-profile civil rape case amounted to €1.3M
