Prolific volunteer, UCSD grad will represent city's most heavily Asian district including University City, Mira Mesa
Kent Lee, San Diego’s newest City Council member, brings the perspective of a father raising two toddlers and someone with expertise on the local arts and nonprofit communities.
“So much of the city is about young families trying to figure out if this is a place where they’re going to stay,” said Lee, who is raising toddlers Alynna and Oliver with his wife, Phuong. “Sometimes we will want to amplify those voices, but that’s not the only community I’m trying to represent,” Lee said. While Asians are the largest ethnic group in District 6, they account for only 40 percent of residents there.
He said UCSD hadn’t been a longtime goal for him, but that he chose the school because it was far enough from home and because he considered San Diego a beautiful place. He’s the first in his family to graduate from college. He has also worked with the Asian Business Association of San Diego and the San Diego Asian Pacific Islander Coalition.
