Leeds United midfielder Charlie Crew joins Doncaster Rovers on loan for the remainder of the 2023-24 season to gain valuable first-team experience.
Leeds United have facilitated a loan move for teenage midfielder Charlie Crew to Doncaster Rovers for the remainder of the 2023-24 season. The arrangement, finalized with the League Two club, aims to provide the 18-year-old with valuable game time and further his development. Despite earning international recognition this season, Crew's chances of securing consistent first-team minutes at Leeds appeared limited.
Doncaster Rovers, currently situated in seventh place in the League Two table, are only two points shy of the automatic promotion spots. They have secured their passage to the FA Cup fourth round after defeating Championship strugglers Hull City in a penalty shootout on Sunday. The club is optimistic about a successful campaign, and Crew's contributions are anticipated to play a role in their pursuit of promotion. Crew will now have the opportunity to accumulate substantial playing experience in League Two before returning to Elland Road in the summer. In a related development, Leeds United is expected to announce within the next 24 hours that striker Joe Gelhardt has joined fellow Championship side Hull City on a loan deal until the end of the season. Crew expressed his enthusiasm about the move, stating, 'I’m really excited for this and really pleased that it could get sorted so quickly. I spoke with (Doncaster boss) Grant (McCann) and he showed real belief in me. He’d clearly watched me and believes in me so it was a no-brainer.’ Leeds United's official statement confirmed Crew’s departure, stating, 'Leeds United can confirm Charlie Crew has joined Sky Bet League Two side Doncaster Rovers on loan, until the end of the 2024/25 season. The 18-year-old has been with the Whites since 2022 and during that time he has progressed through the Under-18s, Under-21s and more recently into the first team set-up, making his Championship debut against Plymouth Argyle in November. Having also made his senior international debut for Wales, Crew will now gain further experience in South Yorkshire with Grant McCann’s side, who are currently in the play-off positions in their push for promotion. Everyone at Leeds United wishes Charlie the best of luck during his time at the Eco-Power Stadium and we look forward to seeing his further development.
