Sean Duignan won the Dublin Journalists Captain's Prize at Royal Dublin with a huge score
Legendary RTÉ news man Sean Duignan made headlines of his own on Monday with an incredible golfing achievement. The 88-year-old Galwegian, who had an illustrious 40-year career at RTÉ News, defied his age to beat a field of 68 players and capture the Dublin Journalists Golf Society Captain’s Prize at Royal Dublin Golf Club.
Duignan shot a superb score of 43 points on the iconic Bull Island course to win the coveted trophy, bridging a gap of 40 years since he last won it in 1984. It’s an extra special year for the Dublin Journalists, who are celebrating their Golden Jubilee having been formed 50 years ago. This year’s captain Roddy Hyland was joined by 25 past captains and members at the awards ceremony and dinner where Duignan, known to all as Diggy, received a standing ovation. Duignan became RTÉ’s political correspondent in 1976 and the Six-One News anchorman in 1988 in what was a fiery period in Irish politics. He was also Government Press Secretary from 1992 to 1995, but then returned to RTÉ and presented ‘The Week in Politics’ from 1995 to 2003.“Forty years ago, I won the Society’s Captain’s Prize in Stackstown. I was off 18 handicap then. I won’t say what I’m off now! But in golf everyone has a chance on their day,” said a thrilled Duignan. He added: “Like Old Man River, you’ve gotta just keep rolling along! Thanks to my great friend Barry Linnane for keeping me going.” Royal Dublin is the spiritual home of the Dublin Journalists and guests at the Bulmers-sponsored outing included Christy O'Connor senior's son Christy and Leonard Owens, former professional at the club. Vice Captain Conor O’Hehir, a grandson of famous commentator Michael O’Hehir, went around in level par 72 and won Class 1.
