The Kildare native will star as Lucius, the son of Lucill in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2.

Oscar nominated director Lenny Abrahamson has said he hopes Paul Mescal wins an Oscar next year after the star signed up for Gladiators. The first movie earned Russell Crowe his first Oscar – something which Lenny is hoping for Mescal next year after he missed out on the Oscar this year.

“Yeah, I stay in touch with Paul and actually by chance I went to see his play the day he got nominated for the Oscar so we all had a lovely catch up after that so it was lovely to do. He said intimacy co-ordinators protect actors – and said no one could ever deny that there was no on screen chemistry between Paul and Daisy Edgar Jones on screen.

“So now I think it is particularly good because if it becomes something that is just expected, it’ll work in the most effective way when people maybe aren’t so careful. Like I would hope to pride myself and the people I work with and having a good sense of duty of care and the duty of actors but that is not always the case so for those people you think when the productions aren’t maybe as responsible, having an intimacy co Ordinator there really does protect actors.

“I’m due to hand something into the headmaster at the end of this month so we’ll have a look at it then and see what’s realistic.”“It has. It has been great because that was full on for two shows, really. One back-to-back and that was a lot of work. So it’s been really nice to have a different rhythm and have a normal life really.
