He was tried in Halifax by Court Martial on board the Flag Ship Belleisle on 26th August, condemned and executed on 31st.

The court settled disputes when they arose, often between Acadians, or with the small number of British residents in the colony, and also some local Mi’kmaq who resided in the area. The court also acted as a criminal court, deciding the fate of those charged with crimes. The federal election was held in 1908, whereupon Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier was re-elected with a third majority, defeating Borden’s Conservatives. However, Borden’s Conservatives would later go on to defeat Laurier’s Liberals with a majority in the 1911 federal election.

A year earlier, on 4 May 1910, the Naval Service Act had established the RCN with Canadian-born Admiral Sir Charles Edmund Kingsmill appointed as the 1st Commander. At the time, Kingsmill had served in the Royal Navy, achieving the rank of Rear-Admiral before being sent to Canada to command the Marine Service of the Department of Marine and Fisheries.

The conference officially began on 1 September, and after a great deal of deliberations , a decision was reached to consider the union of all the provinces and the question of Maritime Union was shelved. Further meetings between the delegates continued in Halifax, Saint John, and Fredericton, with a second Conference planned for Quebec later in October.
