The Last Word: Politician Leo Varadkar recalls his most memorable political moments so far, his favourite way to unwind, when he is happiest and one thing he can't live without
What has been your greatest achievement in life?If you could revisit one day in your past, what would it be?
The day of the Marriage Equality Referendum count . I started the day at the count centre in my constituency, and even at that point we could see that we were going to win. I then officially opened St Francis’s Hospice in Blanchardstown, which I had been campaigning for for years as a politician and as Minister for Health. Then I went on to the referendum count in Dublin Castle, and some parties in town afterwards.
I guess that is Dr Matthew Barrett – even though we annoy each other a lot of the time, we’ve experienced life together and grown closer together, and I hope we’ll spend many more years together.As a politician it was the early days of the pandemic, speaking to the country from the steps opposite the White House in Washington DC, and the weeks that followed. When I bump into people, even now it’s four years later, they still talk to me about it and how they felt at the time.
