Less than 1 per cent of female Defence Forces applicants inducted

As of May 31, 2024, there were just 558 female personnel in the Permanent Defence Forces. There were 7,447 members of the Defence Forces on the same date, meaning women make up just 7.5 per cent of the total force

Less than 1 per cent of all female applicants to the Defence Forces have entered induction, new figures have revealed.

This included five women inducted into the army, two into the Air Corps and three into the Naval Service. He added: "Óglaigh na hÉireann remains committed to increasing female participation rates at all levels of the Defence Forces in order to increase capability and to better reflect the society from which the Defence Forces are drawn and serve. The Defence Forces is working to both attract more female applicants to the Defence Forces and to ensure that they get successfully through the induction process.

"Special consideration is paid to women as a target group for recruitment within the general recruitment framework and the High Level Action Plan agreed by Government on the Commission on the Defence Forces contains a range of recommendations designed to assist in increasing female participation in the Defence Forces.
