When I was a child, my street didn’t have a neighbourhood watch. But we did have a neighbourhood witch. Genuinely. She knew about flower remedies, had a cat, long hair, read tarot and lent me the spare key to my front door whenever I’d accidentally locked myself out. Which was often.of the early 1990s – one of the other times when we had a Conservative government and young people wore unattractively baggy t-shirts. I remember that recession.

If you are lucky enough to be able to build a network of people around you then their skills, resources and knowledge will all reduce your need for money.

They will drive you to the station, lend you their blender, offer up any weird things that came in their online shopping, come and fix a leaking sink, print something out for you, put together flatpack furniture and look after your children.
