Opinion | Letters to the Editor — Proposition A, gerrymandering, Alzheimer’s disease, voting
Much like our mayor, my earliest Dallas memories include Fair Park. As a little girl I watched my father play one of his first Dallas Cowboys games in the Cotton Bowl and have fond memories of visiting the park and museums with my parents and siblings.
Nostalgia is not the only reason I support Proposition A, the $1.5 billion ballot initiative to restore the Cotton Bowl and five other Fair Park venues and expand the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center downtown. The economic case for this transformational investment is clear: No sales or property tax increases on Dallas residents for projects that will benefit us all for generations.
One look as the new shape of House District 4 is enlightening. In contrast to its previously approximately square shape and competitive balance fairly reflecting the preferences of our area, the new district is an indescribably bizarre shape that allows for a slam dunk for any Republican candidate. Johnson makes a good point. More people die from Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias than from breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. Yet much of the public believes dementia is a normal part of aging. It is not. And because Medicare does not cover dementia in-home care, or elderly residence in a memory care facility, families bear the cost themselves. It’s time for greater attention to this disease and effective drugs to combat it.
